SARAH "LEEGAL" MATHIS Sarah "Leegal" Mathis, 99, of Panama City, FL, went home with the Lord on Thursday, August 3, 2023. She was born December 20, 1923, in Washington County, Florida, to the late Joe Everitt and Daisy Everitt. Sarah was the youngest of 4 children (Wilbur, LP, and Dotsie). She was married to the late Leo Mathis Sr., and to this union, two children were born. Leo Mathis, Jr., from Panama City, FL, and Kevin Mathis, Sr., from Apollo Beach, FL. Sarah accepted Jesus at an early age, joining Jerusalem Baptist Church in Chipley, FL, then uniting with St. John Baptist Church when she relocated to Panama City, FL. She graduated salutatorian from Roulhac High School, Chipley, FL, and Florida Memorial University with a Bachelor's in Education. Sarah also received her Master's in Elementary Education from Florida A&M University in 1957. "Go Rattlers" Sarah was a prominent teacher at Glenwood (A.D. Harris) Elementary School for most of her 41 years. Mom loved educating children and touched countless lives as a teacher. Sarah was also known for numerous contributions to her church, community, and national organizations: - She led the Kitchen Ministry and sang in the choir. -The NAACP awarded her the Teacher Trailblazer Award in 2019. -Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. - She pledged and was inducted at Florida Memorial in 1949. Sarah was one of the Charter Members of Theta Psi Zeta, which was formed in February 1978. She was also a Life Member. - The National Education Association (NEA), the nation's largest professional employee organization, is committed to advancing the cause of public Education. She leaves to exemplify her cherished life example of memories to two sons, a daughter-in-law, Teresa Mathis; one granddaughter, Chaka Mathis; one grandson, Keevin C. Mathis Jr. (Atlanta, GA); and one great-grandson, Antonio Middleton; A special daughter whom she didn't have - Kathy Holley and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins.
